One Million Community Health Workers

Join the Count Towards One Million!

Make your project part of the count towards one million! Join the One Million Community Health Workers (1mCHW) Campaign to show your support for the rapid deployment of one million Community Health Workers (CHWs) in sub-Saharan Africa by 2015.

The aim of the 1mCHW Campaign is the expansion of CHW programs in sub-Saharan African countries, scaling up high-quality programs from local areas to the national level in order to meet the Millennium Development Goals for health.

CHWs are critically important to saving lives of mothers and babies, strengthening health systems and achieving universal health coverage.  The goal of the 1mCHW Campaign is to support governments and partners who are dedicated to CHW scale-up in sub-Saharan Africa, where some of the world’s most vulnerable populations are located and access to basic health services is lacking.

Professionally trained and equipped CHWs can dramatically improve critical health outcomes such as reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combatting HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. In addition to providing basic treatment and preventative care, CHWs track disease outbreaks and provide communities with a vital link to the broader health care system.

The 1mCHW Campaign is launching an interactive data dashboard to inform governments and partners about CHW operations in sub-Saharan Africa. This dashboard, called the Operations Room, will reside on the Campaign’s website and will allow us to compile, consolidate and disseminate information on CHW activities per country at a district level.

In doing so, we will all be contributing crucial information on gaps in service delivery and opportunities for CHW scale-up.  The Operations Room will be continuously updated with data provided by CHW program implementers.

If you have access to programmatic information about a public, private, or NGO-operated CHW program in sub-Saharan Africa, complete the online registration form to have your program pinned to the Operations Room map. Your contribution will help jumpstart the Campaign’s effort in counting up towards the goal of one million CHWs.

You can submit information regarding CHW programs using this online registration form. The registration form is also available in French. It should take approximately fifteen minutes of your time. (A separate registration form should be filled out per project and per country.)

Join us in the effort to transform health care systems in sub-Saharan Africa!
